Wesley Junior College Hosts its Ninth Annual Lecture Series on Artificial Intelligence

On November 21, 2024, at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts, Wesley Junior College hosted an impactful Ninth Annual Rev. Dr. Claude Cadogan Lecture titled “Artificial Intelligence: Its Advantages and Disadvantages of use in Education.”

The Rev. Dr. Claude Cadogan Lecture Series was named after the Belizean-born Claude Langton Cadogan who served as a Methodist minister in Belize, Jamaica, and the Turks and Caicos and significantly impacted the Wesley Methodist Church in Belize City.

The event commenced with a welcome from Bishop Elswith R. Clare, Board Chair.

Our managing director, Mr. Maynor Larrieu, was invited to present on AI. Maynor Larrieu is an experienced digital marketer, speaker, trainer, and strategist with over 22 years in the tourism industry. He has presented at various tourism conferences and developed impactful workshops on digital marketing.  Additionally, he is certified in Google Analytics and web development.

Also presenting was Dr. Adriani Coleman, who founded DLPS (Digital Learning & Pedagogical Solutions) with the mission to provide quality 21st-century education skills using technology to create a positive social impact for all Belizeans. She develops innovative digital learning solutions to empower students, teachers, and communities nationwide.

Before launching DLPS, she served as an educator for eighteen years, during which she witnessed firsthand the importance of reaching all students, regardless of their learning needs or background. Her drive as a teacher stemmed from having a child with autism and another with dyslexia, which fueled her passion for inclusive and accessible education. She also worked extensively with at-risk youth, further solidifying her commitment to using technology to create transformative educational opportunities.

The Importance of Discussions on Artificial Intelligence in Education

Events like these are crucial in shaping how society understands and interacts with AI technologies.

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming education by enabling personalized learning, automating administrative tasks, and providing new tools for educators and students alike. However, these advancements come with challenges, including concerns about equity, data privacy, and the potential for over-reliance on technology.

Events like this lecture help educators, students, and policymakers address these challenges and harness AI’s potential responsibly by fostering open discussions. They provide a platform to evaluate the ethical implications of AI use, encourage collaboration, and inspire innovative solutions tailored to local educational contexts. Most importantly, these conversations empower stakeholders to make informed decisions, ensuring that AI enhances learning opportunities without compromising inclusivity or human connection.
